✨ Esthetician Tipping Guide

How Much to Tip an Esthetician — Because Glowing Skin Has a Price

You just spent an hour having someone carefully tend to your skin, work out your stress, and send you out looking luminous. The service is done. The tip question arrives. Here's exactly what's standard — and the one exception that surprises most people.

Esthetician Tipping Guide 2026

Basic facial (60 min)18–20%

💉 The med spa exception: If your treatment is performed by a licensed nurse practitioner, physician assistant or doctor — Botox, fillers, laser resurfacing — tipping is not expected and some clinics have explicit no-tipping policies. These are medical professionals in a clinical relationship. A glowing review is the most appropriate thank-you.

Should You Tip If You Used a Groupon or Discount?

Yes — and tip on the original price, not the discounted price. If a facial normally costs $120 and you paid $60 with a deal, tip 20% of $120 ($24), not 20% of $60 ($12). Discounts come from the business; the esthetician's time and skill haven't changed. Tipping on the discounted price is one of the most common — and most frustrating — things clients do from a service provider's perspective.

Cash vs Card Tips for Your Esthetician

Cash is strongly preferred. Card tips often take days to reach the esthetician via payroll and get taxed immediately upon receipt. Cash goes directly into their hands that day — no waiting, no processing cut. If you don't have cash, Venmo or Cash App transfers work beautifully and many estheticians actively prefer them. Put the tip in an envelope if you're at a spa — it's a small gesture that feels intentional.

The late arrival effect: Beauty industry etiquette experts consistently note that arriving even 10–15 minutes late to a facial appointment can cut your treatment short while your esthetician still has back-to-back bookings. Showing up late and tipping generously (20–25%) is the gracious acknowledgment that their time was affected, not just yours.

💬 Frequently Asked Questions

Tip estheticians 18-20% for facials, waxing and standard spa treatments. Always tip on the original service price, not a Groupon or discounted price. Cash tips are preferred — they reach the esthetician immediately without processing delays.

It depends on the service. Tip estheticians and massage therapists 15-20% for hands-on treatments. Do not tip licensed medical professionals performing Botox, fillers or laser treatments — these are clinical services where tipping is not expected.

Tip 18-20% for a facial. For a $120 facial, that's $21.60-24. Round to $22-25. Cash is preferred. Always tip on the original price if you used a discount coupon — the esthetician's skill and time are unchanged regardless of what you paid.
